We have been learning about animal systems. Here you will find students making neurons out of pipe cleaners using a different color to represent the different parts (axon, dendrite, nucleus, and cell body).

One month down and we have already done a LOT of learning in reading and writing! Here are a few highlights from our September ELA learning: Reviewed literary genres: Learning about ROOT words, SUFFIXES, and PREFIXES Wrote I AM poems about what makes us each unique! In honor of homecoming and football season, we edited NFL football players TWEETS. Taking straight from their Twitter accounts, we worked to correct their grammar using proper editing marks. We created writing goals for this first quarter based on our Fall Writing Prompt Rubrics: Stay tuned for more on what we have been doing in Social Studies!
As mentioned on the Hoppin Facebook page, through a grant opportunity, we have been given a great privilege of becoming a "Walking Classroom"! This program helps address different learning styles and allows for physical activity within the school day. Students walk, listen, and learn to educational podcasts which are aligned to the Common Core State Standards. We feel it will be especially beneficial for students who are highly active due to its physical stimulation and that being able to get up and move around will enable our students to better enjoy, remember, focus, and understand a lot of the concepts needed to move on to 6th grade. So far, we have utilized this great program numerous times and look forward to using it all throughout the year! We have been off to a fabulous start in fifth grade! In our first week, we learned and reviewed the expectations that help create the foundation for a productive and fun school year. A major focus has been on team building and creating a community of learners. Major focuses include: speaking with kindness, encouraging one another, learning how to be positive "losers" and humble "winners", being positive even when things aren't going well, and working with others by checking for agreement. We have had a great time learning these valuable lessons through the following games: ::SAVING FRED - working together, we helped our friend Fred who's boat capsized with his lifejacket still inside. Poor Fred could not swim, so using only a paper clip, we helped rescue him and get him into his lifejacket without letting him touch the water. ::UNKIND WORDS - we worked together as groups to squirt out toothpaste from the bottle. This was certainly easy enough, however, when asked to put ALL of the toothpaste BACK into the tube, difficulty was an understatement. We compared this to how our words affect others and how often it is easy to let unkind words slip but it is much more difficult to take these words/feelings back even with an apology. ::OREO and Fruit LOOPS - learning patience and focus was practiced by moving an Oreo cookie down the face only using FACE muscles! We also worked slow and steady at balancing as many fruit loops as we could on a popsicle stick. ::Cotton Ball Relays - with a dab of Vaseline on our noses, we stuck a cotton ball on and worked together to race across the room to collect as many cotton balls as we could in our teams plate! ::M&M Challenge - working together as teams, we took turns sucking an M&M to a straw and placing it on our team plates to create a design. Homecoming! We started our day with a pep assembly in the gym. Then, we spent time participating in football themed learning activities, had a tailgating party, and made signs to cheer on our Three Rivers Wildcats. |
