Every Christmas, for the past few years, fifth grade has picked a community service project to support. This year, we decided to help Toys for Tots. We spent two weeks selling Candy Canes at school. Students sold candy canes in the morning with a partner and tallied the amount. During morning work they sold to fifth graders and counted up money. Then, during math class, we looked at how many candy canes we sold, how much money we made, what the total was, and what our current profit was. Slowly, our chart grew and grew! This year, we profited $524!!! This last Thursday, our entire fifth grade team - 46 students, 6 chaperons, and 2 teachers traveled to Walmart with a budget and a plan. When we arrived, we were greeted by Walmart employees who presented us with an additional $100 to spend. The students shopped with their chaperons, picking out toys to donate. While shopping, a Hershey Chocolate representative decided to support our project by presenting us with an additional $100 cash on the spot! Walmart also provided us with cookies, punch, and a mini stocking for each student to enjoy during their shopping trip. We were all blessed by the experience and the support we received from our community in helping with this great project! The toys were dropped off at the Lions Club to be distributed though the Toys for Tots program.

Students have worked hard to research their heritage and how they celebrate Christmas or a winter holiday. Thanks to your family discussions, we identified our heritage, then we chose one to focus on. Once we had our culture, we began our research through websites, books, and articles. We took notes on our research identifying how our culture celebrated, what the holiday was called, what special activities they did, their character like Santa who brings them gifts, special foods, and more. Our big focus was on how similar and different their celebration is to ours. With our research done, we began to answer our focus question that became our essay's "Claim" (or Thesis statement). We then wrote compare and contrast text structure informational essays and/or paragraphs depending on our writing level. Bringing geography into the project, we used maps, globes, and atlases to discover where our cultural country is on a world map. It is alway interesting to watch students discover the SIZE comparisons of other countries compared to our own. Many of them were shocked by how small their "Country" was. Geography can be very eye opening for one's world view. Finally, the kids presented their cultural heritage ornament to the class which was to resemble a tradition or celebration that their culture does. The presentations went really well, with each kid sharing about their culture's traditions, and the ornaments turned out fantastic! |
